The Danger of Glycation
Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) measures the percentage of red blood cells that have sugar attached to them, providing a 90-day average of blood glucose. When glucose levels are chronically elevated, sugar molecules bind to proteins and lipids without enzymatic control—a process called glycation. This forms Advanced Glycation End Products (AGEs), which stiffen arteries, damage kidneys, and age the skin.

Common Mistakes (What Not To Do)
- Obsessing over transient spikes from high-intensity exercise. Heavy resistance training will cause the liver to dump glycogen, spiking blood sugar. This is a physiological stress response, not a sign of insulin resistance.
- Relying solely on A1c if you have high red blood cell turnover. If you donate blood frequently or have certain anemias, your RBCs live shorter lives, artificially lowering your HbA1c score.

Order of consumption matters. Eat fiber (vegetables) first, protein/fat second, and carbohydrates last. Additionally, a 10-minute walk immediately following a meal drastically blunts the post-prandial spike.
Is berberine as good as metformin?
Berberine operates via similar AMPK activation pathways and has shown comparable efficacy to metformin in lowering fasting glucose in several trials, but requires higher dosing (e.g., 500mg 3x daily) and can cause severe GI distress.
